Philosophy
Mission StatementOur mission at the Charles Darwin Elementary School is to create opportunities for our children that support the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will enable all students to be confident, life-long learners and full functioning citizens in a global economy. Our program's focus will be to strengthen math and science instruction and increase literacy through our school wide curriculum. In addition, many enriching, extra-curricular activities will be offered to complement academic achievement and encourage intellectual, social, emotional, and cultural growth. The Darwin family dedicate and commit ourselves to high expectations for our students, teachers, parents, and community members. We believe that together we can make this mission become a reality. School Overview The staff consists of 62 teachers, 12 career service employees, 2 school clerks, 2 security monitors, 7 lunchroom employees and 7 custodians. Darwin serves 950 students, of which, 487 are limited English proficiency students and 60 are Pre-Kindergarten students. There are 50 classrooms, 1 special education self contained classroom, 8 Bilingual classrooms, and 2 Italian and 2 Spanish World Language classrooms. Darwin Elementary School is located at 3116 West Belden Ave. in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest side of Chicago. Its Pre-K through 8th grade student population of 950 is comprised of approximately 83% Hispanic, 13% African American, and 3.5% white. The majority (96%) of families receive pre-paid or reduced lunches. 36% are limited english proficient and are receiving Spanish bilingual instruction. Darwin offers an English Spanish Dual Language Program from pre-k through 4th grades, Italian and Spanish as second languages and a special education inclusion program. |
